Founded in 1987 in Santiago, Chile, Jack Stern y Cia. Ltda specialises in the construction of seawater desalinization plants, irrigation systems, piping, pumping, filtering and purification of salty, hard and contaminated water, and water treatment and purification in general. The company, comprised of 24 persons, also focuses on installing systems that are environmentally friendly, and when possible use renewable energy technologies appropriate for the specific requirements of each customer.

During the past three years the company has diversified their services by working in the area of seawater desalination for drinking water, and during the years 1998 and 1999 developed and built the first seawater desalination plant manufactured in Chile. A plant designed for the physical-chemical characteristics of Chilean seawater, which does not require the injection of chemical products, therefore creating a system without emissions. In addition, through experience and research, the company has developed a system of energy recovery, which has a much greater efficiency than other systems currently available in the world market, reducing the cost of potable water production by reducing the electric energy involved in the process. They are currently involved in the design and construction of desalination plants which are totally powered by solar and wind renewable energy.

The company also specialises in the engineering and construction of mining waste water dissipation systems and has built systems of reverse osmosis for seawater. The company has realized important engineering works in irrigation and transport of water for large mining consortiums and agricultural companies - which has permitted them to be very well positioned in the drinking water, agricultural irrigation, piping, filtering and water pumping and filtering market.

The three members of the company who visited Tibet in August, to make the on-site survey and complete the water project for Gangchen Village were:

Jack Stern Nahmias - General Manager. Academic studies include Civil Engineer Studies at the University of Chile, School of Engineering; Bachelors and Masters Degree in Agronomic Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

Hugo E. Vargas Anguita - Main field engineer, Quality Control Manager, structural engineer, design engineer. Academic studies include a Degree in Civil Engineering, with specialization in transportation, along with a parallel course in Systems engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago, Chile.

Thomas A. Heckel - Energy Consultant. Academic studies include Bachelors Degree in Economics from the American University, Washington DC, Usa; Independent postgraduate studies in Intuitive Development and Applied Philosophy, Varanasi, India.
