Losar, a time for new hope and joy

Peace Times 14

The traditional Tibetan New Year, known as Losar will this year be celebrated on the 6th of February. This, one of the most significant Tibetan festivals brings together Tibetans who both live locally as well as those who have come to the holy Boudhanath stupa from remote villages and far away mountains. Tibetan lamas circumambulate the stupa followed by the pilgrims until sundown, before returning to the monasteries brightly lit and decorated for the special celebrations. Many prayer ceremonies (pujas) are held throughout the Tibetan communities, both in the monasteries and in private homes.

At the Himalayan Healing Centre, the preparations for Losar will this year begin on the 4th of February, that is two days before the new year truly begins, when it is traditional to throw away all negativities accumulated throughout the year, that is the day before preparations for the Losar begin with all night pujas to welcome the new year.

A traditional long life prayer ceremony will be offered to Lama Gangchen in the morning of the 11th of February. This very special and auspicious event will be followed by a dinner, which will also mark the introduction to the 4th International Congress on Alternative Medicines and Non-Formal Education.
