From UK to Nepal 2000

Help for a very poor country

Peace Times 10

A new association has been set up in Nepal with the aim of promoting awareness in the U.K. about the conditions of extreme poverty in which at least 95% of the population of Nepal live. The Nepal 2000 project set up to help the community of Chapakot in Pokhara, is hoping to build a base from which volunteers can operate to bring medical assistance, education and training, to the local community.

Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries, added to this the geography of the country makes it very difficult to provide essential services to the rural areas where there are no Governmental provisions made for health or education. People have to be financially responsible for their own health care, and school buildings have to be provided by the local community (they are usually very basic). Teachers’ salaries and all other necessary equipment for education have to be covered by school fees or paid for by the families. At least 50% of children in Nepal receive very little or no education at all.

It is the intention of the association to build a structure that can serve as accommodation for volunteers, as well as a small clinic to serve the local population of the remote area of Chapakot.

The people in this area are extremely poor, existing on subsistence farming, and find the 10km journey to the nearest hospital facilities, as well as the cost of the medical care - far beyond their means. The project will operate as a branch of the Himalayan Healing Centre which has already been providing such services to the community of Boudhanath for 5 years.

The association is looking for enthusiastic people to promote and fund-raise for this project in the U.K. It is also compiling a register of people who have skills in health care, education or welfare fields who would be prepared to work in Nepal as a volunteers.
