Nobel up front

Peace Times 11

John Paul II received seven Nobel Peace Prize winners (Mihail Gorbachev, Rigoberta Menchu, Shimon Peres, Joseph Rothblat, David Trimble, Betty Williams, Frederick De Klerk), together in Rome for their first Summit, and asked them to put their efforts into ending the war in Kosovo. «Peace is the true heart of political life - said the Pontif - peace is not a vague idea or dream, it is a reality which is to be built day after day with everyone’s efforts». The seven Nobel declared themselves ready without hesitation to «act with diplomatic means to collaborate with the United Nations for a swift solution to the actual conflict and prevent new dangers». It says in their document: «It is indispensible to underline the importance of political decisions and the inadmissable use of force as an instrument to find solutions to problems among states».
