The Government of the Kingdom of Nepal has once again demonstrated its 100% commitment to the war waged against polio. Government nominated healthcare centres continued to administer anti-polio drops to thousands of children, on the 8th of March, as the 6th anti-polio immunisation day was observed throughout the cities, towns and villages of Nepal. Together with their parents and sibblings, around seven hundred children under the age of five queued patiently at the Himalayan Healing Centre Clinic (Arubari-Boudha, Kathmandu) waiting their turn to receive the medicine that may in future save themfrom the terribly crippling disease of polio. The entire staff of the clinic worked tirelessly throughout the day to list the childrens’ names on the official government register, administer the drops and even at times coax some of the children into opening their little mouths and accepting the medicine. For those children whose parents could afford it, the bitter taste of medicine was sweetened with gifts of sweets and local made ice-creams from the array of street vendors who had camped outside the entrance to the clinic. There is also to be no way of escape for those children who did not attend - the staff were once again hard at work the next day making home visits! |
